In addition to the famous madrasah on Registan Square in Samarkand and the madrasah in Gijduvan, Ulugbek built a similar madrasah in Bukhara in order to emphasize the city as the Muslim center of Central Asia. A rather high portal in the madrasah leads in two directions – a mosque and a training hall (darskhona). An inscription from the Quran is carved on the doors of Ulugbek Madrasah: “Seeking knowledge is a duty upon every Muslim”. There is another saying here: “Over the circle of people knowledgeable in book wisdom, may the doors of God’s blessings be opened every day”.
